چکیده

Interstellar C2 absorption line observations towards the southern OB associations NGC 2439, Vela OB1, and Cen OB1 are used to infer gaskinetic temperatures Tkin and densities nc towards lines of sight with previously determined large CH and CH+ column densities. Towards NGC 2439, the material is characterised by temperatures of Tkin = 75–85 K and densities exceeding nc > 1000 cm−3, and a fractional C2 abundance of about x(C2)= 1.510−8. Temperatures and densities inferred towards two stars in Vela OB1 are Tkin = 65–85 K and nc ≥ 600 cm−3. C2 fractional abundances in the cloud complex obscuring Vela OB1 are about half the value found in NGC 2439. For the lines of sight towards Cen OB1, values of Tkin = 70– 95 K and fractional abundances of x(C2)≈ 5 10−9 are found, and towards HD 114213, Tkin = 25 K and nc = 400±100 cm−3. The observations demonstrate that C2 resides in cool gas at temperature of Tkin < 100 K. The C2 column densities are correlated with those of CH, which is expected from theoretical models. This suggests that CH is efficiently formed in the cool material as well, together with C2. This finding does not support expectations from recent MHD and vortex models of CH+ formation, which stipulate that neutrals such as CH are abundantly produced in hot regions of many 100 K temperature.

Interstellar absorption lines toward Cep OB4

An analysis of optical echelle spectra towards nine stars in the Cep OB4 association is presented. Interstellar absorption lines which arise in the (1, 0) and (2, 0) bands of the CN A 2Π – X 2Σ+ red system towards BD+66◦ 1661, BD+66◦ 1674, and BD+66◦ 1675 are used to infer accurate CN column densities N(CN). A comparison with earlier measurements in the CN violet system allows to infer a CN Dop...

Comparative study of CH+ and SH+ absorption lines observed towards distant star-forming regions

Aims. The HIFI instrument onboard Herschel has allowed high spectral resolution and sensitive observations of ground-state transitions of three molecular ions: the methylidyne cation CH, its isotopologue 13CH+, and sulfanylium SH. Because of their unique chemical properties, a comparative analysis of these cations provides essential clues to the link between the chemistry and dynamics of the di...

Non-Thermal Chemistry in Diffuse Clouds with Low Molecular Abundances

High quality archival spectra of interstellar absorption from C I toward 9 stars, taken with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, were analyzed. Our sample was supplemented by two sight lines, 23 Ori and β Sco, for which the C I measurements of Federman, Welty, & Cardelli were used. Directions with known CH absorption, but only upper limits on absorption from ...

Hubble Space Telescope Measurements of Vacuum Ultraviolet Lines of Interstellar Ch

Three interstellar absorption lines near 13708 seen toward Oph have been assigned byWatson to Rydberg transitions in theGYX (or 3dYX ) band of CH. Our survey of a dozen diffuse interstellar lines of sight shows that the three absorption lines are consistent with the known column densities of CH, by deriving the following oscillator strengths: f (1368:74) 1⁄4 0:019 0:003, f (1369:13) 1⁄4 0:030 0...

Far - Infrared detection of methylene ⋆

We present a clear detection of CH 2 in absorption towards the molecular cloud complexes Sagittarius B2 and W49 N using the ISO Long Wavelength Spectrometer. These observations represent the first detection of its low excitation rotational lines in the interstellar medium. Towards Sagittarius B2, we detect both ortho and para transitions allowing a determination of the total CH 2 column density...
